About a year ago, Microsoft announced that it would officially retire the online version of Skype for Business on July 31, 2021. Soon, the service will no longer be available. As its designated follow-up, the Microsoft Teams communication platform is already being used successfully by a large number of companies.
Companies still using Skype for Business Online today can access the full functionality of the communications service until July 31. After the end-of-life date, various limitations will arise, including those relating to mixed operation with Microsoft Teams. IP Dynamics explains what this means in practice:
- In the future, third-party conference bridges will no longer be supported
- There is no Cloud Connector (CCE) or hybrid voice scenarios
- Users in Teams-Only mode can no longer switch to another mode
Hybrid solutions consisting of Skype for Business Online and Microsoft Teams will no longer be possible in the future. But for companies that want to continue using both platforms in mixed operation, there is a solution!
Hybrid solution? Learn how!
The on-premises version of Skype for Business will remain fully functional. The current version of the software (2019) will continue to be supported for another four years. In addition, on-premises Skype for Business can continue to be operated as part of a hybrid solution with Microsoft Teams. The interoperability of these two services will be maintained. Therefore, it is recommended that you now set all online users of Skype for Business to Teams-only mode or migrate back to the on-premises version. In this way, you create the technical prerequisites for smooth collaboration between your colleagues.
In addition, the on-premises version of Skype for Business can still be used in conjunction with a Contact Center solution. However, the change to Microsoft Teams is also possible here. With the Dynamic Agent, IP Dynamics has developed a future-proof solution that enables native integration of Contact Center technology into the communications platform.
If you have any questions about the end-of-life of Skype for Business Online or are interested in switching to Microsoft Teams, we will be happy to advise you at any time.
